Build Your Small Business With Effective Email Marketing

By:

Many small business owners have lots to deal with. You often have to wear different hats and juggle lots of tasks. Small business owners often handle sales, finance, operations, marketing, and other departments to hold it all together.

And it's even more challenging in the last few years as markets contract, competition gets stronger and pricing gets squeezed. We've been there. And we've survived and even thrived in this environment.

We've used email marketing effectively and thought you might benefit from a few pointers from our hard won experience. Follow this guidance and email marketing will help your business too.

Here's how to use email to grow your business.

Stay close to your customers. How do you communicate with your customers now? Do you send them flyers, print newsletters, direct mail, or catalogs? Your first action item is to get your customers email addresses and add them to a mailing list. Your second step is to start communicating with them. Take the approach of sending them valuable information. Make sure you try to help them face the challenges THEY are facing. You'll want to keep them thinking of you, especially when your competitors come calling.

2. Build a relationship with prospects EVERY small business needs new customers and prospects to grow. When you do acquire a new prospect, add their name to a list (with their permission of course) and send them a series of pre-written emails (called autoresponders) over a period of about 90 days. These messages will help to build trust and make your sales process easier.

3. Send announcements about your events. Your business or staff might be attending tradeshows, holding open houses, industry events, or conferences. If you do, take the opportunity to send an email message in advance and increase your chances for one-on-one conversations at your events. Or after attending an event, send an email to your customers with some useful information or a summary of key learning from the event.

4. Help your sales force keep in touch. Give your sales reps a reason to talk to your prospects or customers. Send an email with information or an announcement. After the message has been sent, have your reps make a courtesy call and touch base. Conversations will start and you'd be surprised at the number of new opportunities this will create.

5. Update your suppliers. Good supplier relationships can really help your business. You never know when a supplier can help you with an introduction to a key contact or offer a preferred rate. Create a supplier list and keep your suppliers informed of your plans.

When you consider using email in your business, consider using it to send a different targeted message to customers, past customers, suppliers, prospects, and resellers. This strategy will create more impact than sending a generic email newsletter to everyone.
