The Buffalo Sabres were shaped in 1970 by Seymour and Northrup Knox. Toronto Maple Leafs former coach and general manger Punch Imlach was signed by Knoxes. The epithet "Sabres" was chosen in a local contest in 1969. Most popular Montreal Jr. Canadian and Gilbert Perreault were selected in Sabres initial entry draft. Buffalo Sabres had a successful first season with 24 wins and 63 points. Gilbert Perrault received Calder Trophy for NHLs best recruit with 38 goals and 72 points.
Sabres then hired Rick Martin and Rene Robert that resulted in well known French Connection line of Martin-Perreault-Robert. Sabres made their first challenging appearance against powerhouse Montreal Canadians in a six game series in 1973 and lost.
Punch Imlach was replaced by Scotty Bowman in 1979. Bowman had an instant impact on Sabers because he had just led Montreal Canadians to four Stanley Cup victories in a row. Bowman led Sabres to Wales Conference Finals with 110 points when they lost to the New York Islanders by 4-2 in Stanley Cup Championship. Buffalos Czech star Dominik Hasek was one of the leading goalies in 1990s. He was the best goaltender for Sabres in 1993-94 seasons with 1.95 goals on average.
Buffalo won the Eastern Conference quarter finals against New Jersy Devils in 1994 by 1-0 and Hasek made 70 implausible saves in the victory. Hasek continued and won two consecutive Vezina Trophies as NHLs top goaltender. In 1994-95 Sabres were outplayed by Philadelphia Flayers in the beginning round match. Alexander Mogilny was signed and Pat Lafontaine continued to struggle against brain injuries. Coaching responsibility was given to Ted Nolan and team moved to HSBC Arena eventually.
Sabres continued their success in the next season. Toronto Maple Leafs lost a short five game series to Sabres and Sabres made to the franchises second ever Stanley Cup final against defense minded Dallas Stars. Dallas Stars won the game series with Brett Hulls contentious Cup winning goal. Sabres were back in the competition next year but lost to the Flayers in first round.
The following year the Sabres were back in the competition playoffs, but lost to the Flyers in the first round. The 2000-01 campaign became the most victorious season for Buffalo with fourth most game victories in team history (46).
Felony was done by Miroslav Satan and Dominik Hasek as Hasek left Buffalo and joined Detroit. Sabres had to struggle against economic and ownership issues to make a foundation of young players.
