Budget South Indian At Sai Ram Parlour | Vizag

What you see - Nestled in the busy lane of Dwarkanagar in Vizag, Sai Ram Parlour has become a landmark in the city. This pure vegetarian restaurant had a humble beginning. It was just a breakfast haunt for early morning workers who would trudge in for their share of lip-smacking idli, dosa, sambhar and chutney. Today, its a restaurant with a two page menu card! The old timers in Vizag will vouch for the growth of this little homely and warm restaurant.

At the outset, the ground floor is marked by busy passersby who stop by to have a quick bite. There are just high tables and no chairs here with strangers sharing the table and eating to their hearts content. The ground floor also caters to quick takeaways. Further inside, theres a fully air-conditioned restaurant with a seating capacity of 25 pax. The first floor has the non air-conditioned restaurant and the kitchen.

The staff here wears uniforms ranging from black and orange (for stewards) to bright green (for cleaners) and grey (for kitchen staff). The name Sai Ram Parlour runs across the back of their shirts and theres a little crest on the left hand pocket.

What you get - As we browse through the menu, we realize that though South Indian food is what it specializes in, Sai Ram Parlour has also forayed into a few Punjabi bites like Tandoori Roti, Choley Bhaturey and some Vegetable dishes like Veg Handi.

We played it safe by sampling the South Indian flavors that it is famous for. From the Plain dosa at a rate of Rs. 30 per plate to the Onion Cheese dosa at a cost of Rs. 55 per plate, we could choose from five different kinds of dosas. There are Idlis and Vadas too and we could even have them served dunked in sambhar. The choice also included Pessaratu and Pongal (hot and sweet) too. We ordered for the good old Idli Vada mix and a Plain dosa. We relished both of these and ended with Payasadam (curd rice) and Pesarattu (green moong dal dosa). Since we had gone in the evening, we couldnt sample the Pongal which is best had fresh and piping hot in the mornings. The food we ordered was hot and served swiftly. The idlis were so soft that they just melted in our mouth. The dosa was crisp. There was a variety of chutneys served coconut, garlic and the quintessential gun powder.

Our verdict Sai Ram Parlour is a foodies paradise for those who enjoy authentic South India food. Kids would love to enjoy their dosas and the idlis here with the option of having them with sugar. The restaurant is a warm place yet the crowd can sometimes be overwhelming if you are looking for a quiet place to eat. Service is clean and quick. The staff mostly speaks in the local language but can switch to Hindi or English too. They engage with the customers on a personal level providing with information on what is available, what is the days special and even guiding on what not to order because it is not too warm. The best time to visit for the south Indian tiffins would be between 9 AM and 12 PM. There is a public parking area available next to the building where Sai Ram Parlor is housed.

What you pay for a meal for two Rs. 250-350

Anytime between 7 AM 11 PM (till 9 AM the dine-in sections do not open though you can stand and eat or takeaway)
