Buddha Tooth Relic Temple - A Day Out In Singapore's Chinatown

Composed of many cultures that overlap but never really completely blend, Singapore offers visitors the spice of life. Those looking for a cultural experience will not be disappointed by the country's offerings. Reflecting its cosmopolitan nature, Singapore gives visitors the opportunity to explore a number of temples, churches and mosques, and take part in their various activities.

The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum are located in Singapore's Chinatown district. The temple is built along the architectural styles of the Tang dynasty, and houses the Tooth of the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The Tooth was originally discovered in Myanmar in 1980, before finding its final resting place in Singapore. The Tooth is kept on a stupa, which is a type of shrine. The stupa weighs about 320 kilograms and is made of gold. Other related relics are also kept here. Interested visitors can also explore the Sangha Museum and the Buddhist Culture Museum, both of which are part of the temple. A theatre within the building is used to show films and cultural performances.

The temple follows a daily schedule, which starts with the Morning Opening Ceremony Board Bell and Drum ritual at 4.30 am. This is followed by morning chanting at 5 am and the opening of the Mountain Gate at 7. The Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic can be viewed between 9 am and 6 pm. The inside of the temple is intricately decorated, and conveys a deep sense of spirituality. Since its opening, it has become one of the most popular attractions in Chinatown, due to its historical and cultural significance. Simple vegetarian meals are served in the basement of the temple daily, and while there is no charge, donations are always welcome.

Singapore serviced apartments offer a terrific alternative to hotels. The luxury serviced apartment Singapore available from the Ascott Raffles Place Singapore is conveniently located and has excellent facilities. The rooms are elegantly decorated, and offer residents complete privacy. With the Raffles Place MRT station close by, travelling becomes a breeze. It is the ideal place to stay for travellers who like to feel at home no matter where they go.
