Bucking The Trend With A Smaller Car

By:

Looking at our city streets today, it's easy to believe that driving a car is all about size; the abundance of enormous sports utility vehicles and large sedans taking up the roads can make it difficult to get around unless you're on a bike or motorcycle. Even if they're not driving, they are often parked on both sides of the street, making the road tighter than many drivers would like, and it's perhaps this that has lead to the people forsaking their four door saloons and opting for smaller cars like the Daewoo Matiz or the MINI.

Cars like the MINI or the Suzuki Swift simply take up less space, making them ideal for driving down these newly cramped city streets, as well as working their way into those tight parking spots which the SUV's or large saloons just can't fit into. They are also a nice aesthetic change from the behemoths that we so often see doing the morning school run or driving to the local supermarket. There's something very pleasing about the look of many small cars, especially the MINI which has a classic aesthetic that is largely unchanged since its inception in the 1960's and has never really gone out of fashion.

Though not all small cars are as economical on petrol as others, especially the modern hybrids, the new MINI range from Cooper is fitted with BMW's EfficientDynamics technology, making it one of the greenest cars on the road, and almost all small cars will use less fuel than the currently fashionable SUV's, which are notoriously thirsty for petrol. Due to their compact size, a smaller car will usually have a smoother journey through city streets as they won't need to stop and start to drive down streets with parked cars on both sides as much as a larger vehicle will, making them even more fuel efficient.

Aside from the advantages of fitting down narrow roads and into tight parking spaces, smaller cars such as the Peugeot 206 also offer another advantage over the larger vehicles we see populating our roads and car parks - they are considerably cheaper, both to run and also to buy. Indeed it is possible to purchase nearly four smaller cars for the price of one Nissan Pathfinder, and smaller cars have a trendy aesthetic which tends to last longer than that of larger vehicles.

As in fashion as these larger vehicles are for the time being, the smaller cars will always find a place amongst drivers, be they newly-licensed youngsters wanting something cheap and easy to insure, someone who drives in cities a lot and needs something able to fit down the cramped streets, or even someone who simply loves the aesthetic qualities of a smaller vehicle. Though the SUV may be in fashion for the time being, the smaller car - especially the MINI - has never really gone out.
