Bst: Will It Be Scrapped?

By:

British Summer Time (BST) refers to the time during the summer months from March to October in the UK in which our clocks are moved forward an hour out of the standard Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Changing our watches to co-ordinate Britain's time zones has become a British tradition, but it is set to be scrapped? Most people have their own thoughts on BST; however, it seems to be the politicians that are in the spotlight over any changes that could be made.

Opposition to BST
There has been some opposition to BST over whether it is applicable. This is in part because of Britain's latitudinal length. There has been a strong support from English politicians to abolish it; however the British Prime Minister David Cameron sparked strong debate after saying he would seriously consider the change to introduce a permanent summertime.

The supporting MPs claim that introducing a permanent summertime would bring lighter evenings for the South and with it potentially cheap gas and electricity bills, however, in Northern England and Scotland that would mean less daylight in the morning, with the winter sun not rising until 10am. Previous attempts at the abolishment by MPs have failed but the Prime Minister's indication that it would certainly be considered has refreshed hope that this can be implemented.

Darker Mornings for Scotland?
Critics of the idea to introduce a permanent summertime claim that it would mean that children would travel to school in darkness which could put them in danger. A recent House of Commons Transport Committee report has claimed that around 80 people die through road accidents as a result of the clocks changing at the end of BST.

Many Scottish MPs believe that such as move would be damaging to Scotland as a whole. Firstly - there is the danger to children but it could also have an extremely negative effect on Scottish businesses, particularly the construction and farming industries. There is a common viewpoint amongst Scottish MPs that the Tories have become used to pandering to people in the South of England but disregarding those in Scotland and the North of England.

Whether BST will be abolished in the UK is yet to be seen. The plans are to be debated in the House of Commons later in the year, but with the Prime Minister keen on introducing a permanent summertime, it is looking more likely than ever that this could happen. Perhaps we will be left with two time zones in England and Scotland, but would this work? We will find out sooner rather than later.
