Brow Lift Or Eyelid Surgery: Types Of Plastic Surgery

By:

When a person has sagging skin around the upper eyelid area, he or she may think she definitely needs an eyelid surgery. But this isn't always the case. When the brow has sagging skin, it causes the eyebrows to be in a low position which allows skin to droop into the eye region.

An eyelid surgery is also called a blepharoplasty. This is a process performed by a plastic surgeon in order to remove excess skin in the upper or lower eyelid region. Sometimes a blepharoplasty is necessary because a person's vision is becoming hampered by the excess tissue. When a patient comes in for a consultation about this problem, a screening will be administered in order to see if the peripheral vision has been reduced. If the eyesight has been adversely affected, medical insurance will often pay for the procedure.

One way to tell if a brow lift will do the trick rather than an eyelid surgery is to lift the eyebrows up into a higher position. If this causes the skin excesses to disappear, the brow lift will probably be the more beneficial of the two operations. If, on the other hand, the eyebrows still appear to be in a satisfactorily high position then the blepharoplasty may be necessary after all.

Both the procedures would be performed in hospitals by cosmetic surgeons. The blepharoplasty takes one to two hours to perform and is usually done on an outpatient basis. There will be initial swelling and bruising but the patient should look presentable within a couple of weeks. The brow lift takes a bit longer to perform and heal from. The brow lift procedure is performed under a general anesthetic and sometimes requires an overnight hospital stay. Swelling and bruising will be apparent for four to six weeks.

There are times when both of these procedures are necessary and may need to be performed simultaneously. It would be wise to do some self evaluation of the eye area in order to try to discern which procedure would eradicate the particular problem. It's also wise to view a variety of "before and after" photos in order to compare the "before" shots to your own eyes.

It is better to choose the best method than to look out for reversing the effects once you are done with the operation. In order to reach a final decision, it's important to make an appointment with a reputed plastic surgeon. He will examine and offer advice on the best procedures for you.
