Brock Lesnar: An Mma Great Come Back

By:

Brock Lesnar has made his mark on MMA like few others have. He is an outstanding fighter with a colorful background and a very unique fighting career.

He came into the organization like a storm, with huge hype and expectations not many fighters could live up to. But he has managed to exceed expectations.

Although Lesnar was said by some to be a "gimmick performer" because he entered the UFC through the WWE professional wrestling organization, his athletic ability and MMA skills have proven otherwise.

So what is Brock's background and just who is Brock Lesnar?

Born on July 12, 1977 in Webster, South Dakota, Brock Edward Lesnar was a huge in size. He grew up as a competitive athlete, excelling in many sports but it was amateur wrestling that he first achieved success.

In High School, Lesnar held a fantastic record of 33-0-0 and in college venture into the finals of the NCAA championship but lost to Stephen Neal who went on to find his fame.

Lesnar's competitive spirit did not take well to coming in second and so he made sure to make a great come back in 2000 where his success would not be denied. He ended up capturing the NCAA heavyweight wrestling crown.

While the difference between professional wrestling and amateur wrestling is huge, Lesnar's credentials captured the eye of the WWE. Then again, the fact that Lesnar is six-foot-three and nearly 300lbs worked in his favor. His tremendous charisma would help him as well and his athletic abilities allowed him to pick up on the basics of entertainment based wrestling.

Lesnar did go on to be a WWE champ but knee injuries and the wear and tear of the road lead him to an early retirement. He then looked to the NFL.

But the NFL was not to be for Lesnar so he then set sights on Mixed Martial Arts. He wanted fame and was bound and determined to get it somewhere.

Lesnar signed on in 2007 with K-1 Sports to compete in MMA. He was scheduled to face the incredibly huge fighter Choi Hong-Man at the June 2, 2007 Dynamite USA show held at the 100,000 seat Los Angeles Coliseum.

The bout did not take place as an injury forced Hong-Man out of the event. He was replaced by Min Soo Kim who Lesnar destroyed in a little over a minute to claim his first MMA victory.

Shortly afterward, Lesnar began his career with the UFC beginning with UFC 81: Breaking Point. He was faced off with Frank Mir.

Lesnar made a crucial rookie error right at the start though. He stood up sloppily to Mir's guard and got caught with a kneebar which ended up in submission. He was criticized by some for being "just a wrestler" but others recognized his professional ability.

It was at UFC 87 that Lesnar defeated Heath Herring by unanimous decision after some serious ground and pound. He proved his UFC worthiness at that point.

It had been Mark Coleman who was originally scheduled to fight Lesnar but Coleman had pulled out die to an injury. It was speculated Coleman was picked to build up Lesnar's record but in the end, the result was the same with Lesnar dominating and winning the bout.

Shortly after the Herring victory, Lesnar went on to beat Randy Coture and thus won the UFC Heavyweight title. He was then set to fight a rematch with Mir since Mir held the interim title and would be a unification match.

It was at UFC 100 on July 11, 2009 that Brock captured the undisputed heavyweight title when he won by technical knockout.

There was much controversy after the fight when Brock insulted one of the sponsors, Bud Light. It was over money. Brock is sponsored by Dyatize Nutrition who pays him plenty and endorses and wears Warrior Wear Clothing.

Brock's title reign was cut short due to a struggle with mononucleosis in October of 2009.

On July 3, 2010 in Las Vegas at UFC 116, Brock made a come back in every sense of the word. Facing off with Shane Carwin, the two tangled immediately, taking the fight to the ground.

Although Carwin had shown no mercy, continuously bashing his face, Brock reached in and found what it took to throw heavy punches that ultimately won him the match, the title and the Fight of the Night award.

Where will Brock Lesnar go from here now that he has made his mighty come back? The sky seems to be the limit for the number one ranked Heavyweight in the world.
