Its that time of year again, when thoughts turn to holidays, where to go, what type of accommodation, sun, sea and sand, or countryside and wildlife. Plenty of choices, but the British love affair will always be with camping and campsites.

What prompts the great British public to sleep under canvas or take to the road in a vehicle with your own bed in tow at the back? The answer is simple - its easy, inexpensive, flexible and just fabulous.

Camping out under canvas until only about a century ago was mainly for reasons of war and it was only at the start of the twentieth century that the leisure part of camping really took off.

In 1907 in Britain saw the formation of the Caravan Club of Great Britain and Ireland, but caravans were used in Europe and Britain by Romany groups for at least a century before. Having said that, the term caravan is even older, coming originally from the Moroccan karwan or group of desert travelers and dates back to Biblical times and was first used in Britain to mean vehicle around the 19th century.

Camping and caravanning has been an integral part of British life ever since, but it was after 1945 that camping and caravanning as leisure holidays really took off as it was very affordable to families even on a tight budget. This remains true to this day.

Camping was never going to die out even though affordable package holidays abroad meant that some campsites closed down, but as of 2011 camping is here to stay. In the past couple of years, due to the economic climate, staying in the UK for holidays is becoming known as a staycation and has become increasingly popular as people realize that while you cant do anything about the British weather, there is plenty to see and do around the country, from beaches to bird watching, fishing to festivals. Its all there for the holiday maker to take advantage of.
