Britains Best Cities For Party People

By:

For 24 hour party people, the United Kingdom has some great places for truly hedonistic nights out. And while London boasts some of the sleekest and chic-est spots in the country, frequented by many a celebrity, its surely the north of the country that holds the crown when it comes to hardcore clubbing. Manchester is, of course, legendary for its nightlife, which became famous the world over in the 1990s with the Madchester scene, which centered around the Hacienda nightclub (now a block of modern flats, sadly), which gave birth to bands such as the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays. A few years later and Manchester had stiff competition in the clubbing stakes from other northern cities such as Liverpool, where the club Cream became arguably the countrys first super-club, and any Liverpool airport hotels was often to be found full of partied-out travellers who had arrived in the city from other areas of Europe looking for a night out at one of the worlds most famous clubs. Nearby universities Leeds and Sheffield soon got in on the clubbing act too, with the student populations began to enjoy a dressed-up, big-night-out style that was a direct response to the casual style of Madchester and its clubs.

Further north still, Glasgow is still a top destination among clued-up clubbers, while Newcastle sadly acquired a reputation for lager louts and ladies in skimpy clothing rather than its quality clubs. That said, the harsh reputation is to some extent undeserved (largely contained to the area of town known as the Bigg Market), and clubbers can find everything from breaks to hip hop and dubstep if they know where to look. Manchesters nightlife scene has seen the emphasis switch from clubbing to late-night bars, a scene which was enhanced with the removal of archaic drinking laws banning bars and pubs from selling alcohol past 11pm. Liverpool still attracts many a serious clubber, with its waterfront bars providing a good spot for pre-club drinks. For clubbers looking for a cheap hotel Liverpool centre has options from chain hotels to bed and breakfasts, making this one of the top spots for a clubbing weekend away. Whatever your clubbing style, the UK has a city to match it.
