Bristol Named As The Most Bike-friendly City In The Uk

If you're looking for a bike friendly town the most recent survey by Cycling Plus magazine will assuredly be relevant to you. Out of twenty of the major cities and towns in the UK the inquiry established that Bristol is the most bike-friendly. This conclusion was undoubtedly aided by the 22.8 million pounds Bristol was awarded following being designated as the first "Cycling City" in the country by the Department for Transport in June 2008.

This subsidy was given for the purpose of encouraging more individuals to employ bikes in Bristol by improving the transportation network and has previously funded a cycle path along the outer city ringroad, together with other transportation network improvements. Altogether 100 million pounds was awarded to increase cycling in the UK, other towns to receive financial support being Southend, Shrewsbury, Southport, Cambridge, Colchester, Leighton Buzzard, York, Stoke, Blackpool, Woking and Chester.

The review did not include some of the towns traditionally connected with bike riding, like York and Cambridge, as these do not qualify as the biggest 20 UK cities by number of residents. Bristol beat Leicester into third place, Manchester into fourth place, London into 17th place and Bradford, which came last.

The report included 9 categories of significance to bikers and voters were asked to rate the cities in the survey on all nine categories. These areas included factors such as the number of miles of cycle paths available, the number of non chain-store bike shops the city has, the number of residents using cycles to commute, the amount of pollution, the standards of the roads wherever cycle paths are not available and the incidence of bike theft.

Bristol collected more votes than the other cities in the survey on the number of cyclists and bike shops, better control of pollution and the extent of its cyclist only pathways, although cyclists in Bristol are not totally happy with the speed of improvement, thinking it still too protracted. Bristol at present has a scheme to provide 16 cycle paths in and around the city, all paid for by the Cycling City awards, and work has started on a four mile pathway to make available a safe cycle link between the neighboring villages with the city.

Bristol is in addition home to Sustrans. Sustrans is committed to developing sustainable transport and works to help people choose kinds of transport that benefit both their health and the environment. With additional grants, including support from the Bicycle Association, the Association of Cycle Traders and the Consortium of Bicycle Retailers, grants from the Millennium Commission helped them to build the first 5000 miles of the National Cycle Network.
