Bristol Ct: Best Places For Your Home And Family In Connecticut

By:

Bristol is a charming suburban community twenty miles southwest of Connecticut's State Capital, Hartford. The combination of Bristol's central location to major metropolitan and commercial centers, its mix of culture, tradition, history and industry, together with its superior school system makes Bristol one of Connecticut's best communities for your home and family.

Bristol has been known as the "Clock City" because of the many early Connecticut watch making industries that flourished here in the 19th Century. You can step back into time at the American Clock and Watch Museum, a unique museum entirely dedicated to horology with over 1500 clocks and watches on display going back to the 15th Century.

One of the American Clock and Watch Museum's favorite displays is the two-story tower clock that provides a close-up look at the insides of what makes a clock "tick". The museum's grounds also has an authentic early American sundial garden complete with period flowers and herbs.

Today Bristol is primarily residential with a diverse choice of houses ranging from historic colonials and remarkable Victorians to contemporary homes, apartments and condominiums. There has been a push for commercial development in recent years and a renovation of the downtown area which has included a complete overhaul of a park in the center of town.

In addition to many smaller shops and businesses, Bristol has a wide variety of commercial services, and retail stores. Among the commercial shopping destinations are Bristol Commons, Bristol Farm Plaza and Pine Street Shopping Center.

The town has several distinct communities. Forestville is the southeastern quarter of Bristol and was still a Native American hunting ground until the 19th century. Edgewood is the northeastern quarter of Bristol.

Lake Compounce is the oldest theme park in continuous operation in America. The Lake After Dark Summer Concert Series is one of the many recreational and cultural activities in Bristol offering Friday Night music over the lake.

Other recreational and cultural institutions in town include The Nature Center, featuring a nature library, walking trails, live amphibians and reptiles. Bristol is also home to the The New England Carousel Museum. The Imagine Nation located in downtown Bristol is a hands-on, interactive children's museum ideally suited for ages two to ten.

Passing through the town is Interstate 84, which commuters drive to Hartford, Waterbury, New Haven and beyond.

The combination of its close proximity to major metropolitan centers, its heritage, museums and superior school system makes Bristol one of Connecticut's best cities for your home and family.
