Bringing Your Pets To Portugal

By:

Dogs, cats and other pets are wonderful companions and they can be such a precious part of our lives. If you can't bear the thought of moving to your new property in Portugal without Fluffy or Bowser, here are some things to keep in mind:

European Pet Passport. Before you leave the country, make sure your furry friend has an EU pet passport. This little booklet contains all the information about your animal, such as their proof of rabies vaccines and identification number. Any animal travelling within an EU country, such as Portugal, must have a pet passport.

To get your pet's passport, ask your licensed veterinarian. They will confirm that your pet has all of their up to date vaccinations and issue them their travel documents. If your pet has just received its first rabies vaccination, it will have to wait in quarantine for 21 days before it may enter Portugal. If it was a booster injection, administered before the last vaccine had expired, there will be no time delay.

Preparing Your Pet to Fly. To prepare your pet to fly down to your Portugal property, invest in a comfortable pet carrier and a blanket or a mat for the bottom of it to keep them warm. The container should be big enough for your pet to sit up and stand in, and turn around, and it should be well ventilated. To get your pet used to being inside the crate, you can feed him or her in it for a few weeks with the door closed before you leave for your Portugal property. Let them explore the crate with the door open, and leave treats in there for them sometimes, so they think of it as a nice and comfy place. It is best not to feed your pet for several hours before a flight, to reduce the chance of them being sick or having an accident.

Make sure that your pet has identification tags attached to their collar, harness and crate with your contact information on them. Get to the airport well in advance so that you have time to check in your pet.

Helping Them Adjust. Once your pet has arrived at your new real estate in Portugal, they will need some time to get used to their new surroundings. Make sure to bring their favourite toys, blanket, or bedding to make them feel more at home. Spend as much time with them as possible, which will help put them at ease. Take your dog for a walk on the lead and let them sniff the new neighbourhood! For cats, it is best to keep them at home for at least two weeks, so that your real estate in Portugal is familiar to them and they will come back to it once you let them outside to explore.

With attention, care, and preparation, you can take your beloved creatures with you to your new home in Portugal!
