Guangzhou, Chinas fourth largest city comes with a history that has mythical roots of five celestial beings that arrived to a land that was stricken with drought and gave the denizens rice. After which, Guangzhou was said to have flourished. With a history that has been recorded as far back as 214BC, one can be rest assured that the relics that remain are priceless and well worth a look. Today the city enjoys a cosmopolitan feel and economic boom. The food is exceptional and the nightlife is something to look forward to.

There are several attractions in the city that are worth a visit, such as Yuexiu Park in Northern Guangzhou with beautiful historical work and the Mausoleum of Nanyue King which was discovered in the 80s but dates back to 111BC. Among the other attractions is the oldest Taoist temple, San Yuan which offers a quick respite from the hustle of the city or Shamian Island, an enchanting foreign enclave. In addition, travelers can also visit the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, Memorial Garden of the Martyrs, and the Bright Filial Piety Temple.

More 1,700 years old, the Bright Filial Piety Temple is the citys oldest Buddhist temple, if not the oldest. The architecture is grand and colourful, invoking a spiritual calmness. There are six main complexes that come together to make up the temple. The Heavenly King Hall, the East and West Tower, Sixth Ancestor Hall, Mahavira Hall and the Mahakaruna Dharani Sutra Pilla are the six areas.

The temple has a unique history. Parts of the temple were original built for the home of a prince from the Han Dynasty. It was only in the Song Dynasty which followed the Han Dynasty, that the buildings were later used for the dissemination of the Zen Buddhist way of life.

The upturned eaves of the roofs and the incense burning in the air as you walk around the complex in fellowship with the locals amidst architecture that has stood the test of time is over whelming.
