Breast Surgery: Incision Variations; Which One Is Right For You?

By:

There are different types of breast surgery that many women opt for. Both a breast lift and an augmentation have different incisions that may be used. At times, the type of incisions will be determined by the result that is desired. At other times, the incision will be chosen because of a patient's preference of the best way to hide the scars.

A breast lift is performed in order to tighten excessively drooping and stretched out skin. Many times this has occurred due to the stretching which has occurred during pregnancy and lactation. Aging and the natural downward pull of gravity are also causes for sagging. The lift procedure is performed by a board certified plastic surgeon. During the procedure, extra skin is removed and pulled tightly.

One incision option is the concentric, which is also referred to as the donut. This method was designed to leave a minimum of scarring. A circular cut is made surrounding the nipple and areola area and the remaining skin is then reattached. The scars in a concentric or donut technique remain fairly hidden alongside the nipple and areola's darker hue.

Another method that is used during a lift procedure, where there is a substantial amount of tissue to be removed, is called the lollipop. It is similar to the concentric technique, but with an additional vertical incision below the area, as well. This looks a bit like a stick under a round lollipop, which is how the name was derived. The vertical scar will be visible but will fade greatly over time.

Another incision type is called the Crescent. The crescent procedure entails removing a crescent shaped wedge of skin above the nipple and is best for those who only need a small uplift. The remaining skin is tightened and pulled upward which creates a higher positioning.

In a breast augmentation, implants filled with a saline or silicone solution are inserted either directly below the skin or under the muscle. Incision site possibilities include below the areola, in the crease of skin beneath the breast, in the armpit region or through the belly button.

The location that is most appropriate will depend on the woman's and her surgeon's personal preferences. If a lift is to be performed at the same time as an augmentation, this will dictate incisions, as well.

Incisions variations in breast surgery have many details to consider. If you are contemplating either an augmentation or a lift procedure, make an appointment for a consultation with a board certified cosmetic surgeon in order to discuss the options. With your questions answered by an expert, you will know which technique will be the most appropriate selection for you.
