Breast Reduction: The Risks Involved

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that is performed by a cosmetic surgeon in order to reduce the size of excessive large and heavy breasts. This operation is not performed merely for cosmetic purposes. There are many physical problems associated with weighty bosoms.

Some of the physical ailments that are associated with extremely large breasts include back, neck and shoulder pain, chronic skin rashes in the crease beneath the breast tissue, bad posture, stretched out pendulous breast skin, lowered self image, deep painful grooves in shoulder area that have resulted from bra strap indentations and restricted ability to participate in athletics. A completely healed result should be achieved within six weeks.

Some of the risks that may occur as a result of the reduction mammaplasty include:

Adverse reaction to anesthesia: Extreme care is taken with the anesthesia, but personal reactions vary. Infection at the surgical site: Sterile conditions during surgery make this a rare occurrence, but patients should be aware that it is possible.

Unsightly scars: Individual healing response makes it impossible to give a guarantee about the way scars will look after healing. All scars, however, fade over time. Lack of sensitivity in the nipple and areola region may occur.

Inability to breastfeed an infant post-op. It is wise to wait until after the childbearing/lactation portion of a woman's life to have this procedure performed if breastfeeding a future baby is a probability.

Excessive bleeding: It is wise to stop taking any medication that causes the blood to become thin and which may result in excessive bleeding.

Slow healing response: Being a non-smoker will enable the body to here more quickly and effectively. Cigarette smoking and being in the presence of second hand smoke hampers the immune response.

Most breast reduction surgeries are successful and the patients are delighted with the results. Selecting a reputable board certified plastic surgeon to perform the procedure and following all pre and post-operative instructions will minimize any risks of complications.
