Breast Lift Overview - About The Procedure

By:

Age, pregnancy, and weight loss all contribute to changes in breast shape, including sagging and deflation of the upper portion of the breasts. The goal of breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, is to return breasts to a more youthful position. Breast lift surgery does not change the size of breasts; the procedure does however alter the shape of flattened breasts, restoring projection and reshaping skin to raise the position of the nipples. For those women who are seeking larger breasts in addition to a lift, it is possible to combine a breast lift with the placement of breast implants.

The Breast Lift Procedure

Every breast lift procedure is unique. The technique used during your breast lift procedure depends upon the size and shape of your breasts, the current position of your nipples, the degree of breast skin laxity and sagging, and the amount of skin that needs to be removed. The procedure begins with an incision in one of three possible locations:

Horizontal incision (across the breast crease)
Vertical incision (from the areola down to the breast crease)
Donut incision (around the areola)

To reshape the breast, the surgeon removes excess skin and then lifts remaining tissue. The nipple is repositioned higher on the breast mound to create a more youthful look. When the surgeon achieves the desired breast shape, the incisions are carefully closed with sutures.

After the Procedure

Following breast lift surgery, patients should expect to feel stiff and sore for up to a week. Side effects of the procedure include bruising, breast tenderness, discomfort at the incision sites, and minor bleeding.

Despite the invasive nature of the procedure, most breast lifts are performed as outpatient surgery. Patients should be able to get up and walk around the day of the procedure and most do well resting at a recovery center or staying home under the care of a loved one.
