Breast Lift: Know The Possible Complications Associated With It

By:

A breast lift is called a mastopexy in the medical world. This is a cosmetic surgical procedure which tightens and lifts a saggy breast which has resulted from pregnancy, lactation or the gravitational droop associated with aging.

Complications are rare especially when the procedure is performed by a reputable plastic surgeon. Every person's body is different, however, so there are still the inherent risks. Examples of complications include:

Allergic reaction can occur to surgical tape, dressings and ointments that may be applied during and after the surgery. Some patients are allergic to the latex gloves that are designed to protect them from germs.

Infection can occur although this is very rare. Antibiotics are often administered intravenously during the operation as a proactive step. If the patient has an existing infection or illness before the surgery, it would be wise to wait until it's healed before undergoing a mastopexy.

Excessive bleeding is a risk that is minimized by discontinuing all medications, such as aspirin and other drugs that contribute to heavy bleeding. Accumulation of fluids in the area is possible, which would result in the need to drain the region.
Asymmetrical result is a risk even though extreme care is taken to have a balanced outcome. Loss of sensitivity in the nipple area is possible.

Inability to breastfeed a baby has been known to occur after a breast surgery. Unattractive scars can occur due to an individual's healing response. Much care is taken to hide scars and to make them as unnoticeable as possible, but there are times when they are more unsightly than expected.

Discoloration of the skin is usually a temporary side effect of a mastopexy. Very rarely the discoloration becomes permanent. Adverse reaction to the anesthetic is always a possibility. A highly skilled anesthesiologist will usually be able to successfully handle the anesthetics, but there are always risks with this.

Delayed healing can happen on occasion but can be greatly minimized by the cessation of smoking cigarettes, which is one of the number one causes of a delayed healing response.

Breast lift procedures are almost always successful, especially when performed by a reputable and experienced plastic surgeon. There is a slightly elevated risk of complications when a mastopexy in combined with augmentation with an implant. This is something to be discussed with your plastic surgeon at the time of the initial consultation. The majority of patients end up with a successful result and perky, youthful breasts.
