Breast Lift: About The Surgery

By:

A breast lift, which is known as a mastoplexy in the medical vernacular, is an operation that is designed to work against the effects of gravity. Over time, a woman's chest is destined to sag somewhat if they are at least a certain size. This cannot be prevented by wearing a bra, taking special pills, or through any other form of snake oil people might be trying to sell. If, however, a woman does not care for the effects of aging and pregnancy, she can see her surgeon to get it corrected. In many cases, this procedure is performed in conjunction with implants to further exaggerate the effects of the surgery.

The breast lift is usually performed with the patient under the effects of general anesthesia. The procedure will be done either in a hospital setting or within a surgeon's clinical office. To perform the surgery, the doctor will make an incision around the areola which will continue downward to the bottom of the breast. It will continue along both sides of the crease. With this entrance, the doctor is able to directly manipulate the tissue inside, moving it up. The skin is then tightened and sutured back into place, with any excess skin being removed. In many cases, the nipple itself is repositioned. There is some scarring involved, but it is usually hidden well by the underside of the chest.

Women are advised to lay off of any vigorous exercise for the weeks following a breast lift. Exercise can put undue stress on the chest, which should be avoided during this time to allow a complete and full recovery. Doctors vary as to whether they will prescribe pain medication or advise the patient to rely on over the counter pain relievers for the recovery process. If you're having the procedure done, follow your doctor's advise as it pertains to healing and relieving pain. It will take a month or so for the full healing to settle. At that point, the patient will have a very good idea of what their chest will now look like.

As with any form of cosmetic surgery, it is important to do some research beforehand and find a skilled and experienced doctor. Those wishing to do this can make use of medical referral systems as well as internet sites that provide reviews and ratings for surgeons in your area. Don't be afraid to make several appointments and consultations if that's what it takes to find a doctor you're comfortable with.
