Breast Implant Surgery: An Overview

By:

What was once the exclusive province of actresses and Playboy centerfolds has become a common procedure done all around the world. Referring to, of course, breast implant surgery. No longer do you have to be someone famous or someone making a living from their appearance to have this procedure done. The prices are generally affordable and women everywhere are choosing the procedure in order to feel better about the skin their living in. Here are some basic facts about this popular procedure.

The procedure of breast implant surgery itself involves placing a bag filled with some kind of solution into the chest, expanding the cup size of the patient. There are two common varieties of bag. One of saline, which consists of a salt solution. These have largely fallen out of favor because of the resurgence of the other type, which is silicone. The silicone bag provides patients with what many consider a much more natural looking final result, free of the wrinkles that often accompanies the saline type.

Where the doctor makes the incision is usually up to the discretion of that particular surgeon. Breast implant surgery can be done in a variety of different ways, all of them safe for the patient, but some of them leaving more visible scarring than others. Some doctors prefer to make the incision under the chest. Others go in through the area surrounding the nipple. Still others prefer to make an incision in the armpit or go up through the navel. Discuss these options with your doctor and see which one makes sense for both of you.

When it comes to decisions regarding breast implant surgery, the primary decision on most patients' minds is how big they will choose to go. The size decision is usually decided using cup size as a barometer. Deciding on size is a very personal choice which should be made by you and you alone. The doctor may have their recommendations, but you should not be talked into anything you aren't completely comfortable with. You have to live with the results, not the doctor. While it may not make much of a difference, it should be noted that the most common complaint following the procedure is patients wishing they had gone a bit larger.

If you're using photographs of friends or celebrities to judge what size would look best for you, make sure you choose pictures of people who have similar body types. What looks good on one woman may not look good on you. Keep this in the forefront of your mind when deciding on the size you want.
