Breast augmentation is a very popular method of cosmetic surgery. During a breast augmentation procedure, an implant is placed into the breast in order to increase the breast size, add definition to the breast, or both.

Many people are aware of the basics of a breast augmentation procedure, such as the fact than an implant is used. Beyond this however, many people do not know that there are different implants that can be used, as well as different methods for the augmentation.
Types of Implants Used During a Breast Augmentation Surgery
There are two types of implants used for a breast augmentation procedure. These are saline implants, and silicone implants. Many people remember the horror stories involved with silicone implants in the past, and have a large fear of them. In fact, for some time, silicone implants were not allowed to be used for breast augmentation in the United States.

Modern advancements in cosmetic surgery however, have now given us a silicone implant that is safe to use, and they are now legal to use in the United States again. Even so, many people still prefer to use the saline implant, feeling that it offers a higher level of safety. The two implants do offer different results however, so you will need to speak with your cosmetic surgeon to determine what results you are looking for, and which type of breast implant will work best for you.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Though there are different methods that are used during a breast augmentation surgery, most of them are quite similar. An incision will be made either into the breast or into the armpit, and the implant will be put into place. The implant can either be placed underneath the pectoral muscle, or just under the breast tissue. The placement of the implant will determine how the breast will end up looking, so make sure you understand the difference that the placement makes.

Once the implant is put in place and centered, the cosmetic surgeon will close the incision. You will then be given specific instructions on how to care for the incision points, and what you should do to ensure that you heal without any complication. Breast augmentation is a rather invasive procedure, so you can expect a somewhat long recovery period, that can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on your own speed of healing.
