Breast Augmentation Overview: Saline Implant Issues And Concerns

By:

Saline breast implants are versatile and often used when performing breast augmentation surgery. Saline breast implants come in three varieties: pre-filled breast implants have no valves for volume adjustment; fixed-volume expandable breast implants are filled during surgery through a valve which is then permanently closed; adjustable-volume expandable breast implants have a valve that may be used again to make modifications to volume and size.

Saline breast implants are firm and come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, lining types, and lining thicknesses, making customization easier. Some of the upsides of saline breast implants include:
Adjustability: Saline implants can be filled to varying volumes by the surgeon.
Versatility: Saline implants can be inserted with any of the presently available incision methods.
Less Scarring: Saline implants require smaller incisions.

After breast augmentation surgery, a scar tissue capsule forms around the implant. This scar tissue can grow and create pain and hardening of the breast. Saline implants are less likely to cause this condition, which can be another advantage for some patients.

Even with these upsides to saline breast implants, there are some downsides that need to be considered. Saline solution breast implants are balloon-like and not compressible. Some women prefer the firmness; others believe they look and feel less natural. The firm quality of saline implants can lead to issues in women who are thin or have little breast tissue, as a rippling effect may become visible through the skin.

Some patients who receive saline breast implants are bothered by the motion of the solution and claim that silicone gel moves more naturally. In addition, saline breast implants rupture more frequently than silicone. However, when a saline implant ruptures it will deflate, so it is always evident when a rupture has occurred, unlike silicone ruptures. Furthermore, the saline will dissolve within the body without any potential negative health effects.
