A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner is ranked depending on his level of mastery. Each level signifies different colors. The ranking system for the senior students significantly differs from junior students. Seniors ranking system follows as, white, blue, purple brown and black belt. While, juniors ranking system follows as white, yellow, orange and green belt. Senior students' ages range from 16 and above while, junior students' ages range from 15 and below.

BJJ ranking system also depends in the level of the student's grappling skills. This skills often tests during tournaments and sparring sessions. For you to have a clear wisdom, below are the different distinctions of belts in BJJ ranking system.

White Belt
This is the first level given to the new students of BJJ. In this level your teacher will teach you about the basic defense and escape techniques. When you pass this level, then, you can proceed to the blue belt.

Blue Belt
In this level, you will be focused on mastering your guarding techniques, offensive techniques and survival methods. Generally, you can achieve this belt for 1-3 years.

Purple Belt
For you to achieve this level, you are required to have at least two years of experience in blue belt. Adding up 4-5 years of training will certainly increase your chance of achieving this level. The longer you spent in this level the more you become qualified for teaching new students.

Brown Belt
To achieve this level, you must have at least 1.5 years of experience in purple belt. In addition, you must be at least 18 years old for you to become qualify in this rank.

Black Belt
To achieve this level, you must have at least one year of experience in brown belt and at least 19 years of age. Black belt has 9 levels of ranking. 7th degree is the changing of belts from black to red. However in the 9th and 10th degree a solid red belt will be given to you.

Red Belt
This level certainly means that you are truly fitted and qualified to be called as a master in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Red belt is the highest rank in BJJ. Generally, a student who obtains black belt at the age of 19 can achieve red belt at the age of 67.

Every ranking requires determination and dedication to master the art. The higher you can achieve the more respect you can gain. Continue with your efforts and training, to become a better master and be proud of every rank that you can achieve.
