Braces For An Adult's Smile

Braces are predominately known for the realignment benefits they've brought to teens throughout the years since they were developed for orthodontic use in 1915. However, even though we see the benefit in the beautiful smiles they provide for young men and women in their late teens and early twenties, as they begin college and their careers, there are plenty of adults who did not have the opportunity to receive and utilize these devices. Therefore, as adults they still want to correct their gaps, crowding, or crocked teeth by straightening everything out.

Many young people have minor crowding or minor misalignment, which do not threaten their ability to close their mouth or chew comfortably. Therefore, their dentists would only suggest braces for cosmetic reasons; they wouldn't recommend them for preventative medical reasons. Then there are young people whose parents cannot afford the devices no matter how misaligned their teeth are. So the young person has to wait through high school, college, first jobs and possibly the start of their careers to carry out the application of braces.

When something about the human body is so different from the norm or the accepted standard, both men and women can't help but feel self conscious as they grow up. Those impressionable teen years have the greatest effect because we so want to be not only accepted for who we are (personality, talents, intelligence) but also recognized as attractive by our peers.

When we feel that we don't possess features near the standard of beauty, then we start to come up with ways to hide it from the world because maybe if they don't see it, then they will see us for who we are. This occurs most often when dealing with strangers and in attempts to connect with new acquaintances. However, it can also occur for the point in elementary school when one figures out that it is not to their advantage to have their flaw and carry on all the way through adulthood when they finally change it. They hide from strangers, friends and even family. This is particularly uncomfortable and habit forming when it comes to the condition and positioning of one's teeth. This causes adults to manipulate the way they hold their mouths, speak, and their decisions of whether to laugh in public or not. Adults pursue the physical alterations and esteem benefits of braces because they work.

Regardless of any adults' reason for pursuing the application of braces for their smile improvement, everyone deserves the opportunity to have what they've always wanted. Both men and women want to be confident in the color, shape and alignment of their teeth for their own edification and for how they are seen in the world. As one grows up, the stigma of ridicule from one's flaws fades. Yet, it is still exciting to have a device and a few months make the difference between remembering it's there and forgetting for the rest of your life because it is no longer a part of how you look or how you feel.
