As men age, they often encounter a condition called BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). BPH causes the prostate gland to slowly enlarge. The reason it is termed benign is because it is not caused by cancer or an infection. Hyperplasia stands for enlargement. The prostate gland is placed next to the urethra and when the prostate gland enlarges it puts pressure on the urethra. This pressure causes all different types of urinary system problems, most often, a decrease in pressure of the urine stream.

BPH usually makes itself known by causing the victim to need to urinate more frequently during the day, and at night, while sleeping. At the end of urination there might be dribbling as the bladder has trouble emptying itself. As men age beyond 40 years old the prostate gland will inevitably enlarge. It does not always squeeze the urethra and cause bladder problems but you should be on the lookout for it, nevertheless.

Trouble with urination is not always indicative of BPH. Cancer in the bladder, bladder infection and UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) can all cause problems that are similar to BPH. So, if you are dealing with urination problems you should talk to your doctor so that you can rule out more serious problems.

When you talk to your doctor they will need to know all the details about your symptoms and when they started. You are likely to receive a rectal exam so that the doctor can feel the back of your prostate gland. This is a simple procedure that only takes a few minutes. Your doctor might request a urine sample so that they can determine whether you have an infection. Blood tests are also used to rule out other problems. Other tests that might be used are ultrasound or a biopsy of the prostate gland.

There are a number of things you can do to help soothe an enlarged prostate gland. Hypoxis rooperi (extract of African potato) contains phytosterol glycosides that offer strong support for the prostate gland and is often used in African homeopathic medicine.

Make sure that you always use the bathroom at regular intervals, even if your bladder does not feel full. When you urinate take your time and concentrate on getting your bladder as empty as possible. Never try to hold off on urinating for long periods of time.

Try to cut down on the amount of alcohol and caffeine that you use throughout the day, especially during the evening time. Both of these have a diuretic effect that will make you need to urinate more frequently.
