Boxing is a popular sport all over the world, particularly in North America, having a good infrastructure by means of various boxing organizations. Its popularity continues to grow day by day.

It may surprise you to learn that boxing dates back to around 4000 BC. Boxing matches were going on during the time when ancient Romans and Greeks were fighting one another. The sport undoubtedly had another name in those times, but records of it show that it was more brutal than it is these days.

Evidence shows that these ancient civilizations encouraged the boxing participants to fight each other using fists and metal spikes. It is believed that these battles often continued until one of the competitors was declared dead. These days boxing is much safer, with strict regulations in place to protect the boxer.

Boxing being a bare bones hand-to-hand combats till today continues to have an element of risk in spite of the especial safety features such as the protective head gear. Nowadays all forms of boxing whether amateur and professional uses a computer generated score that determines the final outcome of the match along with gloves without spikes.

Boxers nowadays are given special skilled training which makes the match between two worth opponents an exciting one to watch. They both battle it out for the trophy.

Boxing wasn't a popular sport in North America until the mid 1800's. Once America got a taste of this exciting sport, however, it caught on like wild fire. Today, during International competitions, it's the Americans that lead the way with consistent wins and knockouts.

The popularity of the game has extended beyond all boundaries and the primarily masculine game is now being fought by women. They have entered the boxing ring and overtaken it becoming as experienced as men though they have yet to enter the Olympics arena.

In most cases professional boxers began as amateurs. Some well known names who have engaged in this sport are George Forman, Leon Spinks, Muhammad Ali, Floyd Patterson and Oscar de la Hoya.

There are some differences between amateur and professional boxing matches. The pros fight for anywhere from four to fifteen rounds, with the average being twelve. Amateur matches consist of three rounds.

In boxing match if an opponent is knocked out, doesn't get up after even 10 seconds, it results in an automatic win for the other. But if this is not the case then a judge decides the winner on the basis of points.

People of all ages can participate in the sport of boxing. Many people learn to box so that they (1) have a unique source of exercise, and (2) can work off the stresses and worries of everyday life.

Men however, continue to be its main fans watching each match with bated breath from their respective armchairs.
