Botox Injections What Plastic Surgery Patients Should Know About Injectables

BOTOX injections paralyze the muscles that contract to cause frown lines, crows feet and furrows in the face. Results can last from three to six months on most patients and take about 48 hours to become visible. BOTOX injections are a simple process that takes only 10 minutes.

This non surgical process involves a few tiny injections with a fine needle into select areas of the muscles that contract when frowning. The person administering the BOTOX cosmetic will ask the patient to move their face, making certain frown face, to determine where the muscles lie and where the strongest contractions are. The size and use of certain muscles vary from person to person. No anesthesia is needed, however some patients request a topical numbing cream. The needles are pretty much painless, just a small pinch. There may be some stinging at the injection site as the BOTOX cosmetic is pushed through the needle into the skin, but it is quick and temporary.

The results from BOTOX injections are not permanent, but are dramatic. Once the BOTOX cosmetic has taken effect after about 48 to 72 hours, a flattened appearance can be seen. It can make the difference from looking tired and worn out to rested and relaxed. Although, BOTOX cosmetic has gotten some bad press in the past with remarks that faces looked expressionless, there have been strides to inject only in certain areas limiting the stone faced look.

There may be some bruising at the injection site that could last a few days after treatment. Each person reacts differently to the process. There can be adverse reactions to BOTOX injections that should be considered and discussed with a doctor. Patients are advised to stay upright following injections for five hours and not to cause a raise in heart rate through exercise for 24 hours. They are also asked to make the frown faces which accelerates the BOTOX cosmetic through the muscle and hastens the results.

Side effects include discomfort or pain at the injection site, headache, dry mouth, fatigue, neck pain, and eye problems. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to BOTOX cosmetic may include the following: rash, itching, breathing problems, red itchy welts, or dizziness or feeling faint. Tell your cosmetic surgeon or seek out medical help right away if you experience asthma-like symptoms or begin wheezing, or if you become dizzy or faint.
