Boost Your Energy In The Office Through Proper Nutrition And Stretching

If you ask me, there is absolutely no doubt that holding a "typical," nine-to-five office job is really tough work. Not only is it tedious to be seated in front of a computer screen for the entire day, almost every day, but you also have very few outlets for your stress except the occasional fellow-employee.

The demands of a position in an office can also end up being hazardous to your health if you let it. Too often have I heard office workers in this predicament: "I want to exercise and stay in shape, but in the morning, I am getting ready for work and sending the kids off to the bus, and by the time I get home, I am too exhausted to hit the gym."

It's heartbreaking, really. Keeping your body in adequate shape isn't just for those hoping to lose or maintain their weight; exercise and proper nutrition supply energy to both body and mind while also releasing endorphins to keep you more upbeat and positive.

It also improves circulation throughout all of your vital systems, which means that your ability to think on your feet and problem-solve will be improved, and we all know you want that big promotion, right?

The first thing you should do is perform a check-up on your daily nutrition. Anyone who leads a busy life--which is just about all of us--would know just how to difficult it is to monitor what you are eating. But just following a few general rules can help boost your energy throughout the day.

Don't skip breakfast. I am sure you hear this often, but there are still plenty of individuals out there that continue to ignore the advice. I have heard some complain of an upset stomach when they do eat breakfast, but that is because they have trained their bodies to shut off the hunger alert that is meant to go off in the morning. If it does bother you, then start small with fruit and perhaps a snack-baggie full of whole grain cereal.

Eat when you are hungry. I know this can be nearly impossible to do during a hectic day at the office, but if you plan ahead of time, then munching while you work will not be a problem. If you let yourself starve, then your low blood sugar will cause you to choose something you might regret later.

Prepare snack bags over the weekend, and label them for each day of the week. If you choose fiber-rich cereal, you could even store it in the car so you need not worry about walking out the door without it because you left in a rush.

Avoid the vending machines if possible. If you just can't, then ask your employer to arrange for some healthy selections. If you need to select a drink, shoot for water, fruit juice, or a diet soda. Sugary drinks and snacks will just cause you to crash later in the day.

Be sure to take a few minutes out of every hour to stand up and stretch. If you have the luxury of a private office, then do some lunges and some crunches. Try to get the blood in your legs circulating as much as possible; allowing it to settle from long periods of sitting can cause discomfort or other complications.

Storing small weights at your desk may be worthwhile, too. You don't have to plan an entire workout routine, but getting your blood pumping will definitely give you more motivating energy, which is so crucial in a nine-to-five.
