Bookkeepers

By:

Bookkeeping is the backbone of any business, large or small. The role of a bookkeeper is to enable their business to stay afloat financially. Bad bookkeeping results in lost revenue and lost jobs, or, in the worst case scenario, loss of the entire business.

The term bookkeeper is sometimes used as shorthand for a number of different jobs, such as accountant, auditor, auditing clerk, bookkeeping clerk or accounting clerk. Bookkeepers and accounting clerks may be primarily responsible for preparing a company's financial reports. Auditing clerks double check to make sure the record keeping work of others is accurate and up to date. Depending on the size and scope of the company, different types of individuals will handle different types of financial record keeping and different types of assignments.

In order to become a bookkeeper, an individual needs to have at least a high school degree and some formal accounting or business training under their belt. Bookkeepers with an associates, bachelors or masters degree are preferred, as the extra years of training will enable them to find a better job in today's market. Other skills that a bookkeeper must possess include an eye for numbers, the ability to communicate well with employees, confidentiality, and computer aptitude.
Bookkeepers can also pursue additional certification through organizations such as the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.

Today bookkeepers are in high demand. As businesses grow and change more and more people need detail-oriented individuals who are able to process large amounts of financial information. Accurate recordkeeping ensures that even in tough economic times a company can pull through successfully. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, bookkeeping jobs are expected to rise until 2016 with the average salary of someone within the profession being approximately $24,000 to $47,000. This makes this career path ideal for anyone interested in working in a business setting.
