The city of York has a bloody and tumultuous history. The battles, sieges and political events which helped to shape Britains history are recounted in its museums and ancient monuments. Founded in 71 AD as a massive defensive settlement by the Romans, it later became the capital of Northumbria, under the Angles. Yorks most famous resident was the aptly named Eric Bloodaxe, the last Viking king of the city, who was driven out by King Edred. After the Restoration, control of the city passed from the clergy to local merchants and gentry. Its trading status dwindled, and it became a centre for culture and leisure instead much like today.
