Book A Late Deal But Avoid The Holiday From Hell

By:

Now that the school year has started again, there are a lot of opportunities to take advantage of late deals from holiday companies who have dropped their prices now that the peak season has ended. Theres still plenty of sunshine left, however, at worldwide destinations from the Algarve to Turkey to Florida. Although many of us now think about taking out travel insurance to protect our belongings and help should anything go wrong, how many of us think about gas safety when it comes to our holidays? Hopefully many families have now installed carbon monoxide detectors in their homes to protect should the gas boiler fail and release dangerous gases into the home. But how many think about these dangers when travelling abroad? When booking accommodation, particularly when through a large holiday company, we assume that all health and safety regulations have been met.

Some other countries do not have such strict regulations as the UK, however and gas safety regulations can vary widely across the world, particularly in third world countries. If you are holidaying in the UK then the landlord is required by law to have all gas appliances serviced annually and you can ask to see records of this. While at home we have control over our gas appliances, including how often they are serviced, and by who. In holiday accommodation, however, the gas appliances could be badly fitted or poorly maintained without our knowledge. This can lead to gas leaks, explosions, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning, all of which can kill. Sadly, there were the tragic deaths of two children in 2006 caused by dangerous gas appliances in a holiday apartment on the Greek island of Corfu.

Once you arrive at your holiday accommodation, look for signs and you could save your life:
Black marks or stains around the appliance, or lazy orange flames instead of crisp blue flames, or too much condensation are all signs that the gas appliance isnt working properly.
Buy a travel carbon monoxide detector to take with you as your accommodation may not necessarily have one present.
Check the instructions on how the gas appliance works, as it may be different to your one at home. Read the instructions or ask your holiday rep.
Dont confuse carbon monoxide poisoning with other common holiday ailments such as food poisoning or dehydration. The six main symptoms of CO poisoning are headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness

Finally, always book your holiday through an ABTA registered company to ensure that the company is compliant with all ABTA Health and Safety regulations.
