Bone Cancer: Deadly And Dangerous

By:

Cancer is a very dangerous disease. There are various types of cancers and bone cancer is one of the much known cancer diseases. In lot of various circumstances, cancer in bones can be discovered. When cancer in bone is discovered, at first it needs to find out if this cancer has spread from another site to the bones or originated in the bone tissue itself. Now, many people may think that why this distinction is so important. The reason for this distinction is that it provides correct terminology of the disease and also helps in determining the appropriate treatment of the disease.

As, we have mentioned earlier, there are more than hundred types of cancers which are named after the organ or tissue in which it occurs. When the cells of the cancer spread, they may go through the lymphatic channels to lymph nodes, or may go into the bloodstream and go to other organs or locations in the body which are far-away from the original, or primary, tumor site. Therefore, originating cancer from other parts of the body and spreading to the bones and growing there is very much a common affair. There are certain types of cancers that tend to spread to the bones, such as: include breast cancer, lung cancer, thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, and cancers of the kidney.

However, when the other types of cancer spread to the bone, then they are named after for the tissue or organ where they started and not as bone cancer. For instance, when the breast cancer gets spread to the bones, it is referred to as metastatic breast cancer but not bone cancer. As oppose to the cancers that get spread to bone, the actual bone cancers are the tumors which occur from the tissue of the bones. They are known as primary bone cancers which are pretty rare in compared to spread cancers. The bone cancer most often occurs in the bones of the arms and legs, however it can occur in any bone of the body. Usually, children and young people are more prone to develop bone cancer than the adult people. Depending on the type, place and the size of the tumor, the symptoms of bone cancer develop slowly. Pain is the most common symptoms of bone cancer, however sometimes a lump can be felt through the skin on the bone.

A lot of different methods are available to treat bone cancer. The treatment of the bone cancer basically depends on the type, the location, nature of the disease, such as: if the cancer has attacked surrounding or distant tissues or not. Usually, three main types of treatments are available for bone cancer, for example: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. These therapies can be used either individually or combined with each other for better results. Surgery is often used to treat bone cancer where the entire tumor is removed along with a surrounding area of normal bone.
