Bol's Explained And Why They Are Necessary For Shipping

By:

Many people that are new to shipping with courier companies are not completely sure what the BOL is, or why it is as important as it seems to be. The truth is, out of all the paperwork that your Albuquerque courier sends out with a shipment, the BOL might be the most important out of all the documents. BOL stands for bill of lading.

The bill of lading is easily the most important document because it contains the most information. Anyone that needs to know something about your shipment can usually figure it out just by looking at that one document. Most of the other paperwork that is sent along with a shipment is either to supplement the BOL, or to show that you actually have the legal right to be moving a shipment, such as when you need a permit or a license. The BOL though, is where all the important information about the shipment itself is located.

The BOL contains all the information about where the package originated. This is very important when something is being shipped internationally, especially if a package has to cross multiple borders on its way to its destination. Trade agreements and other laws require careful monitoring of where packages come from when they enter a new country. The BOL makes it clear where the package originated, which will indicate to those examining it if certain trade laws should or should not apply.

The BOL also indicates the dates that packages were picked up and moved. This is important for the companies that might be handling a package if it is being transferred between multiple companies, and important to the ultimate company that will be receiving the delivery. The date that the package is supposed to be delivered will also be marked.

The most important use of the bill of lading is when it is looked at by customs workers. When one package passes from one country into another, there are always officials that need to verify that the package is what it claims to be, and that all the legal niceties have been observed. Almost every country requires a BOL for any shipment that is going to cross their borders. If you are missing this document, your package will likely not be allowed into the country that it is trying to enter. Every good courier company should always make sure that international shipments have a complete and accurate BOL.
