Body Of Lies - Was This A Classic Spy Thriller?

By:

Body Of Lies is a thrilling, action packed spy movie with many twists and turns. Leonardo Di Caprio stars as Roger Ferris, a 'rising star' in the world of espionage. He's tasked with gathering intelligence to catch the elusive Al-Saleem, a terrorist who's responsible for many recent bombings in Europe.

Overall, the movie was very well done and very entertaining to watch. The action scenes were captivating and the storyline will keep you on the edge of your seat for hours. The character development of Roger Ferris and Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe) were done very well. On the other hand, the romantic side of the movie could have been developed a little better.

The primary reason this film is so entertaining to watch is its enthralling story. Terrorists have caught on to Western technology and have ceased to communicate with electronic means, effectively disappearing from the U.S. intelligence radar. So the story follows Roger Ferris as he follows lead after lead trying to chase down Al-Saleem and stop the ongoing series of terrorist attacks.

Unfortunately, his power-hungry boss, Ed Hoffman, a government intelligence chief with the CIA, seems to be getting in his way at every turn. Hoffman tries to run his own operation in the midst of Ferris' operation, causing many mistakes to be made.

The two main characters in the film, as I have already mentioned, are Roger Ferris (Leonardo Di Caprio) and Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe). Ferris is a recently divorced CIA operative. He's sharp, charismatic, speaks Arabic and quickly makes his way to the top in the ranks. He has a slightly rebellious streak, but has the audacity to climb to the top.

Ed Hoffman is Ferris' direct supervisor who seems more concerned with his rise to power than actually bringing terrorists to justice. He's cool and uncaring, sentencing informants to death the moment they cease to be useful. The storyline involves a good deal of interaction between Roger Ferris and Ed Hoffman.

Overall I would probably give Body Of Lies 4 out of 5 stars. The movie is fast paced and entertaining and you definitely won't regret watching the movie. On the other hand, the movie wasn't so exceptional as to be especially memorable. It was a very decent action or spy film, but it wasn't the next Oscar winning film. The acting was good but not phenomenal; the storyline was great but not the next Shakespeare. I had an enjoyable couple of hours watching Body Of Lies and I would say that on a weeknight with nothing better to do, watching Body Of Lies is a great way to spend your time.
