Review Summary

The book is largely based on the famous Body for Life challenge program: a yearly contest that can be entered and won. The program involves a balance of diet, rigorous exercise, and supplementation for a rather drastic makeover of physique and health. The book goes a step further, however, in that it claims to help readers increase in confidence, decisiveness, drive, and control. These are familiar psychological buzzwords on the diet market, and perhaps a bit unnecessary for an otherwise effective fitness and wellness plan.


Program at a Glance

Body for Life is a six-part book similar to many other diet books. From stories of inspirational folks who have succeeded with Body for Life, to the nuts and bolts of living the plan, to the challenge of continuing it for a lifetime, Phillips book seems like a comprehensive Body for Life manual. However, for our purposes here, we are interested mostly in the actual work a dieter will have to do.


Program in Focus

Body for Life runs on diet and exercise, plain and simple. There are supplements involved, but they are just that: supplements.

The diet involves six small meals a day that are portion controlled and balanced between protein, carbs, and vegetables.

The exercise plan involves an alternating cycle of strength training (45 minutes) and aerobic workouts (20 minutes) for six days of the week.

On the seventh day, Body for Life practitioners are allowed to rest and eat whatever they want.


Positives

-Balance between diet and exercise.

-Healthy use of supplements.


Negatives

-Program might be a bit intense for long-term practice.

-Book is a bit conventional and perhaps not necessary to understanding the plan.


Final Thoughts

Phillips is perhaps right to publish a book for those of us who want to know more. But the wisdom of the program seems fairly sound and conventional, so one may not need to buy the book. Regardless, Body for Life has done a lot of good for people, and health-conscious consumers can take a hint from Phillips program.
