Bmw Dealers Ride Recovery

By:

We are - tentatively at least - entering a phase of recovery. Growth of 0.1 percent may not set pulses racing but for the Treasury it's all important. It signals that the UK is officially no longer in recession. The good times are here again and BMW Dealers are one of the people hoping to make the most of these fragile green shoots.

Speaking at the launch of the Series 5, Chief Financial Officer Friedrich Eichiner claimed the manufacturer had survived a turbulent 2009 relatively in tact. Sales dipped by around 10 percent - hardly good news, but he claimed well within the company's 10-15 percent predictions. That's enough to inject a significant amount of confidence and belief that it can return to small growth in 2010.

He, along with BMW dealers everywhere, will be buoyed by figures from January which saw sales rise by around 17 percent year on year. This can be put down to several factors.

Firstly customers are gradually returning to the market across the board. Car sales have risen by almost 30 per cent in January compared with the same time last year; that's despite the epically cold weather and VAT rise. The credit is being given to the government's car scrappage scheme, which pays customers 2,000 pounds to trade in an old car for a new one. This, figures show, accounted for almost one in five sales in January. However, in the long term, most experts expect a tough year. Customer finance is difficult to secure and once the scrappage scheme ends, many worry about how sustainable the recovery will prove to be.

However, BMW dealers remain optimistic that they will fair batter than others. The German manufacturer has come out of the blocks guns blazing in 2010 with a host of new launches and updates to their existing lines. The 5 Series is getting another make over along with the introduction of the Mini Countryman, the much anticipated 4x4 mini.

Along with fresh updates to existing models they hope they can ride the momentum generated by recovery, especially as bankers start spending those much maligned bonuses.

Despite all the optimism, there are reasons to be cautious. The recovery and consumer confidence are extremely fragile. However, BMW dealers hope the manufacturer's recent activity will put it in a strong position to emerge stronger at the other end. While their rivals have been staying under cover and saving costs, the German giant has put a lot into 2010. As the saying goes - fortune favours the bold.
