Over the last decade luxury cars manufacturers have faced increasing pressure from environmentalists and the European Parliament to clean up their act. Strict Euro 5 emissions standards introduced in 2009 meant that all new engines had to meet stricter requirements in regards to nitrogen oxide emissions by 2010. Its likely that by 2012 all cars in a brands lineup will have to emit an average of 130g/km or less of CO2.

According to BMWs website almost 40% of their European BMW Group sales already fall below the 140 g/km mark for CO2 emissions. BMW are certainly leading the way in regards to more eco-friendly motoring amongst the luxury automakers, which includes Audi and Mercedes.

The Bavarian manufacturer has recently been revealed as the highest ranking automotive company in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI), published by the SAM Group. Its the seventh year running that BMW have been identified as the most sustainable carmaker; they are the only car manufacturer to feature in the indexes every year since it was established in 1999.

The success of the BMW Group is built on a long-term approach and responsible action. Being ranked sector leader for the past seven years underscores our corporate strategy and approach, commented BMW chairman Dr Norbert Reithofer.

BMW were the first in the automotive sector to employ an environmental officer to oversee their sustainability strategy in 1978.

BMWs Efficient Dynamics technology has been credited with helping the automaker in their bid to become the official automotive partner of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) required that they meet Euro 6 emissions standards and beat the maximum of average of 120g CO2/km in order to achieve its sponsorship status. As well as being a sustainability partner of the event BMW will be providing 4,000 vehicles to transport athletes and staff.

The Efficient Dynamics program focuses on reducing emissions of BMWs petrol and diesel vehicles. Innovations such as auto start stop, brake energy regeneration, electric power steering and high precision injection have helped reduce CO2 emissions by 15% across the range.

The German carmaker hasnt overlooked hybrid and electric options either. At the Frankfurt Motor Show BMW unveiled two new models under their i sub brand. The i3 electric car and the i8 plug-in hybrid are due to hit showrooms in 2013. They have invested 339 million in their i venture and are already developing new technologies for the future- BMW ActiveHybrid and BMW CleanEnergy. All cars including the new BMW 3 Series are expected to benefit from these new efficient technologies.
