Blog Marketing And Advertisement: A Deadly Combination

If you think that your readers are interested in reading a blog with promotional material in it, think again. People watch the superbowl and television for advertisements. They don't read your blog because they want to read about what you are selling. Blog marketing is about marketing yourself and the valuable information you have to provide your customers with. It's not about promoting your next big product launch.

The best thing you can do right now for your personal branding is to stop selling your products and services in your blog. I have seen many individuals fall into the trap of advertising in their blog. If you were reading a blog would you want to be bombarded by ad copy? So why would your readers want to read it? Remember the golden rule and don't pollute your blog marketing with ad copy, just as you don't appreciate the blogs you read polluted by ad copy.

I'll give you an example. I have been thinking about getting a new car recently. I have read what different car manufacturers have to say about their own brand but I wanted to learn more about what different features could do for me. So I Googled it. I read some blogs about what kind of sacrifices I would be making when purchasing a V6 vs. a V4 and made a pro and con list from this information. I also learned about common problems on each of the cars I have been looking at and researched how expensive these fixes would be. After reading some fantastic blogs and making and finding some great valuable content from people who worked with these cars every day I felt much more prepared to make a decision. This is how your readers should feel after reading your blog, too.

The last thing you want is for your reader to be annoyed with advertisement and promotional material in your blog. Don't try to re-purpose any sales or promotional material in your blogs. This will negatively affect your blog marketing. The only time this would be acceptable is if you were an advertising agency writing about one of your specific ad campaigns as a case study. Remember that your blog marketing should be geared toward your personal branding. Share your knowledge with your readers. Give them some valuable, ad-free content. They will appreciate it as much as you do.
