Block Parties

We live in a busy world, rushing to and from work, shuffling the children to after school sports, and ballet lessons. Although we may live in well-populated neighborhoods, it is possible to live on the same street for years on end and scarcely meet your neighbors. The best way to break the ice is by hosting a block party.

At block parties, neighbors set up tables on the street and usually have refreshments and music. Some neighbors may cook on their grills. Well planned parties often have special events. There may be clowns, bands, pony rides, or raffles.

Block Parties Can Be a Messy Business

The downside of block parties is that they tend to leave a mess behind. Discarded materials can leave the streets in disaster. When you organize one of these, hire a clean up crew. It is usually agreed that neighbors are responsible for their lawn's cleanup, there will still be messes in the street.

Restrictions

Before one of these events, you will need permission from your local authorities. They may require a permit. Neighbors may offer to share the expenses. It also helps to organize the event with the local police department. They may help you barricade the street.

You may need to check with the homeowners' association if you live in a neighborhood with one of these. They may have strict rules that are more trouble than they are worth. This might be a good idea to raise at the next board meeting.

Either way, it's a good idea to get an opinion from the neighbors. If more than half of the homeowners are unwilling to participate or are not excited about the event, you may want to reconsider. In the event that they don't agree, just downsize to someone's back yard. If several families in a row are into the idea, make it a multi family party and invite everyone.

Lighten up and share a cold one with the neighbor that you've never met. You may have a lot in common. Making new friends is always good.
