Blepharoplasty: An Overview - What Should I Know About Eyelid Surgery?

By:

Blepharoplasty is performed on thousands of men and women annually to help reduce drooping eyelids and sagging under the eye to improve line of sight and appearance. Some patients may choose to undergo the procedure for cosmetic purposes, or may require the surgery because they experience obstructed vision from sagging eyelids.

This eyelid surgery is also popular among Asian populations, as it helps to create the impression of a crease above the eye. When performed on the upper lid, blepharoplasty involves an external cut to the eyelid and removal of excess skin prior to suturing.

To reduce the appearance of under-eye bagginess, a lower lid procedure may also be performed. This technique requires an incision underneath the lower lid to remove excess fat and skin.

Neither the upper or lower lid procedures will reduce lines, help with sagging eyebrows, or improve the texture of the skin. Many surgeons may suggest adding skin resurfacing, a brow lift, or eye lift to reduce these issues.

Prior to surgery, a prospective patient will meet with the plastic surgeon to discuss desired and probable results of the procedure. As with any facial plastic surgery, results will largely depend upon existing skin elasticity and bone structure. Some patients with chronic dry eye or other conditions may not be ideal candidates for undergoing eyelid surgery.

After surgery, a patient will most likely be prescribed pain medication, and cold compresses will be used to reduce swelling and bruising. Sutures will be removed after about five days, and most patients are able to return to work within a week or two. Special eye drops and ointment will be used to encourage healing and moistening of the eyes during the healing stages.

As with any procedure, your plastic surgeon should be board-certified and licensed to perform a blepharoplasty. Take a look at before and after photos of the doctors past work to determine if this eyelid surgery may create the result youre looking for.
