Bleeding Piles-how To Differentiate Bleeding Piles From Cancer Of The Colon

Although hemorrhoid is the commonest cause of bleeding during defecation, it is dangerous to assume that every symptom of bleeding during defecation is caused by hemorrhoids.

What are the differences between the symptoms of colon cancer and the symptoms of bleeding hemorrhoids?

1-The bleeding of colo-rectal cancer is usually dark in color and the blood is altered while the blood of bleeding hemorrhoids typically looks bright red and fresh.

You must however note that the bleeding of colon cancer is sometimes scanty and bright red like that due to bleeding hemorrhoids.

2-The false feeling of incomplete bowel movement occurs in both internal piles and colon cancer, although this symptom is commoner in colon cancer.

3-Cancer of the colon is almost inevitably associated with changes in bowel habits; an adult previously having a predictable regular bowel habit suddenly develops irregularity. Episodes of constipation may be followed by diarrhea; early morning diarrhea with the passage of bloody stools is highly suggestive of cancer.

Hemorrhoids on the other hand are associated only with constipation mainly with no significant change in bowel habits.

4-Advanced cancer of the colon could be associated with significant weight loss, piles are however commoner in fat and obese people.

5-The pain of cancer of the colon is more of lower abdominal pain which fluctuates in intensity, the pain of hemorrhoids is however mainly anal in location.

6-Advanced cancer could be associated with symptoms of various degrees of intestinal obstruction which includes inability to pass out feces and gas for days, piles are however not associated with symptoms of intestinal obstruction at all.
