The BlackBerry Bold series was developed by Research in Motion and this was done for different models, namely the BlackBerry Bold 9000, 9650, 9700, and 9780 and 9900/9930. BlackBerry Bold and Curve phones are both in series to distinguish them. The BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 was released in August 2011 and was the first phone in the BlackBerry Bold series to incorporate the touch screen function. Both the Bold 9900 and Bold 9780 are designed with a QWERTY keyboard to ensure that typing is done in an easy and fast manner.

Both the Bold 9900 and 9780 have typical messaging capabilities which are better than the BlackBerry Curve series. The form factor of each of these phones is different, with the Bold 9900 measuring 115 by 66 by 10.5 mm with a weight of 130 grams, while the Bold 9780 measures 109 by 60 by 14.1 mm and weighs 122 grams. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Bold 9780 also retained the optical track pad which is a little slimmer than in previous BlackBerry models. The display of these two phones also differs in terms of screen size and resolution.

The screen size of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is 2.8 inches and the screen resolution is 640 by 480 pixels touch screen, while the BlackBerry Bold 9780 has a screen size of 2.44 inches and a screen resolution of 480 by 360 pixels LCD. The processors of both the Bold 9780 and 9900 also differ, in that the Bold 9780 has a 624 MHz CPU while the Bold 9900 has a 1.2 GHz CPU. The memory of each of these phones is also different, with the BlackBerry Bold 9780 having a capacity of 515 MB Random Access Memory and the Bold 9900 having 786 MB Random Access Memory.

In terms of storage the Bold 9780 has an onboard capacity of 512 megabytes plus a micro SD slot that can accommodate up to 32 Gigabytes, while the Bold 9900 has an onboard capacity of 8 Gigabytes plus a micro SD slot that can accommodate up to 40 Gigabytes. There is a similarity between these two phones and this is in the imaging capabilities as both of them have a 5 megapixel flash camera, but the Bold 9900 has a 720p HD video while the Bold 9780 has normal video capabilities. The BlackBerry Bold 9780 runs on the BlackBerry OS 6, while the Bold 9900 runs on BlackBerry OS 7. They both support 3G network and Wi-Fi capabilities.
