Biting Mites And Lice: What To Do

By:

Biting mites and lice are two different types of insects, but if either or both of these tiny little nuisances infest your home they bring with them a host of different problems that can only go away if you take the right steps. Here's a short overview of what they are and what to do about them.

Whom Do These Pests Affect?

One of the myths about biting mites as well as lice is that they only show up in "dirty" homes where cleanliness and personal hygiene are somewhat deficient. The truth is that even the cleanest of homes can be affected by these itty bitty invaders. They are both animal-borne creatures that burrow deeply into hair follicles and take up residence there: feasting off oily skin secretions. Both pests are also extremely small - only about the size of a pin point, making them practically impossible to spot. So if anyone in your family has hair (and that's most of us!) or if you have pets that may pick up biting mites from a wild animal or bird, you are at risk.

How Do I Know If I Have Them?

Lice are easier to spot than biting mites because their eggs (or nits) are whitish, opaque and absolutely visible if you're looking for them. The best way to distinguish a nit from a simple piece of dust is to blow on it. If it continues to stick to the hair shaft despite a gust of air and can only be removed by pinching it and sliding it down the hair between your fingernails, there's a good chance that you have lice in your home.

Biting mites are harder to see with the naked eye, but the symptoms of infestation are very clear-cut and very uncomfortable. They can cause persistent itching and even a sensation of having something "crawling" on you. Some people even report a burning sensation in affected areas: bottom line - a biting mite infestation on someone's body feels at best uncomfortable and at worse - absolutely miserable! If you don't usually have skin problems such as eczema but are experiencing these kinds of sensations, you may be dealing with biting mites.

How Do I Get Rid of Them?

Using a lice shampoo is the number one way to effectively get rid of this particular pest. You want to follow directions to a "t" and also wash all bedding in the home. For those plush items that cannot be safely washed, place them in plastic bags for several weeks to kill off the bugs or spray them with a bio-degradable, non-pesticide solution designed to get rid of lice.

Biting mites can also be removed using bio-degradable, non-pesticide solutions targeted toward getting rid of these pesky insects. Putting this liquid in a bath or applying it directly to the skin will kill the mites while also providing soothing relief to irritated skin.
