At Balsam Mountain Preserve,
The Birds of Prey program exists to protect and share the wonder of some of nature's most fascinating creatures. As one of a few
NC mountain equestrian communities of NC, we at Balsam want to share all the wonders of nature with Preserve members, guests, and individuals interested in
Asheville NC real estate.
The Trust of Balsam Mountain Preserve
At Balsam Mountain Preserve, we have a problem unlike any other in the hills of Western North Carolina. The Trust will remain being an organization of special distinction because of its humane efforts to protect the lives of non-releasable birds of prey, such as a baby or an injured bird. The Trust restores the health of these birds and provides them with a safe home where they spend their days teaching the local Balsam Mountain Preserve residents about their personalities and abilities.
Preserving the Soars of the Balsam Mountain Eagles
The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was actually on the endangered species list beginning in 1967 in all areas of the United States below the 40th parallel. Many years later in 1995, this bird was upgraded to the status of "threatened" by the US Fish and Wildlife Services and was finally removed from the list in 2007. That means it remained on the endangered species list for 40 years. So, it's our job as US citizens to protect and ensure the survival of this beautiful creature, as well as the eastern screech owl.
Night Owls at Balsam
The Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio) is not listed on the endangered species list, but is a revered creature at Balsam Mountain Preserve. These birds love the deciduous forest of the Preserve, and spend their nocturnal nights on the branches above your window. Due to the small stature of this owl, predation accounts for many losses. As you drift to sleep in this quiet and lively
private mountain golf community of NC, you may be listening to the comforting "hooting" of the Eastern Screech Owl, and thanks to this program, you and your family will continue to do so for many years to come.
Nature's Glory at Balsam
Our full-time naturalists dedicate a large portion of their time to educating local schools and civic organizations through the Trust's
Birds of Prey program. This special element of the Balsam community is just another way that we strive to preserve the mountains. Help us protect these mountains by preserving your
