Bird Proof Your Home In Time For Spring

By:

As winter begins to draw to a close, now is the time to start thinking about bird proofing your home or workplace. This is the ideal time of the year because birds start to change their behaviour in the springtime, the warmer weather will increase the food they have access to meaning that they are on the lookout for new nesting spots and mates. Unfortunately for us humans this means that they will be keeping beady eye out for places in which they can best survive and this includes homes and gardens as we, sometimes inadvertently, provide food, water and shelter the 3 elements they are in need of.

It is these 3 elements you need to address if you are want to ensure that birds dont become a problem in your home and workplace. A quick check around the property will quickly flag up any potential issues taking away food and water sources and blocking off ideal nesting spots such as dryer vents and eaves will hopefully deter anybody flying around looking for a cosy corner. If you have a recurring problem with nesting birds it is well worth treating these spots in particular is important because once they begin to build a nest they like to keep the spot. Some favourite rest spots are also: open attics, garages, barns, boathouse, under roof tiles and under A.C. units. Birds like to nest high so check any appropriate beams and rafters. The main issue with a nest in a home or worksite is that both the nest and subsequent droppings can hold disease and parasites.

There are 4 different ways by which you can bird proof your property. Firstly visual deterrents are designed to be seen by birds to frighten and scare them away from particular areas. Examples of these deterrents are shiny or reflective surfaces or mock predator features. Another method is to deter birds by sound by omitting distress or predator calls which is a great method for a large open space. Another option is to use physical deterrents which put up a physical barrier blocking and preventing birds from gaining access to a particular area. Finally there are liquid bird repellents which can be used to deter birds, bird proofers can advise you about fogging machines or misting units which use a non-toxic grape extract which irritates a birds mucous membranes.

It really is the time to act with regards to bird proofing your property, especially if you had unwanted visitors last year.
