Binging And Purging: The World Of Bulimia

By:

What goes on in the lives of people with bulimia? If you are not familiar with all the symptoms of this kind of eating disorder, it is a devastating illness that takes over the minds of young girls all over the world. Bulimia begins with the desire to be thin and attractive but the end result is an obsession with food rituals and elimination of food that is destructive and dangerous. This illness can cause long term harm to a persons health and without bulimia treatment, serious medical complications as well. Many people find it hard to escape the cycle once it has become a deeply ingrained habit and struggle for years of their lives to eat normally again.

Young women with bulimia want to achieve an ideal body - the ones that they see in magazines, movies and TV shows. They try to accomplish this through starvation and restriction, but their desire to eat their favorite foods creeps up on them. Eventually they reach a point where they obsessively collect foods they are craving and secretively consume them all in a binge eating episode. For some bulimic women the amount that they eat in these binges may not even be very much but because of their intense fear of gaining weight they must get rid of the food. They then find a way to purge the food from their body whether it is self-induced vomiting, laxatives or excessive exercise.

The world of bulimia can be one of self-loathing and obsession, to the point where thoughts and priorities rarely stray from weight loss and food. The illness is damaging psychologically and physically. Engaging in this behavior for long periods of time can lead to health problems stemming from repeated vomiting and laxative use. The life of binging and purging becomes strong enough that even with bulimia treatment, many women continue to fight their attitude towards weight and food. It can take years until they can see themselves positively and eat in a way that is natural and healthy.
