Feeling nausea and bloating after each meal? Enjoy your food with these natural herbal remedies for biliary dyskinesia.
Here are some of the most basic and also the most effective natural remedies you can try to get relief:
- Don't torture your gallbladder with heavy meals and
- Help it recover with herbal teas that have choleretic (stimulate bile secretion) and cholagogue (fluidify the bile to evacuate it easier) action.
In a high-fat meal, the gallbladder empties completely within an hour. Biliary dyskinesia occurs when the gallbladder response is inadequate - hypotonic biliary dyskinesia ("lazy gallbladder", when the gallbladder is emptied too slow) or hypertonic biliary dyskinesia (the gallbladder contracts to strong and the bile is evacuated too rapidly).
Symptoms
In case of hypertonic biliary dyskinesia, after eating foods that stimulate the gallbladder - fatty foods, eggs, chocolate, coffee, there will be violent pains with periods of calm (colics) and also an acceleration of bowel habits, nausea, sometimes vomiting.
If the gallbladder doesn't evacuate enough bile necessary for digestion ("lazy gallbladder"), the pain is more bearable, but there will be dyspeptic symptoms like nausea, bilious vomiting, bitter taste, bloating, constipation and diarrhea. This type of biliary dyskinesia is more common in obese people, sedentary, or those who work in office a long time.
Because symptoms of biliary dyskinesia appear in many other diseases, it is recommended a visit to a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Herbal remedies
Biliary dyskinesia treatment is done by either toning or relaxing the gallbladder and by regulating the liver bile secretion.
There are herbs with choleretic action (stimulate bile secretion in the liver cells) and cholagogue action (stimulate the gallbladder contraction in order to better evacuate the bile in the duodenum).
1. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is an excellent herbal remedy for both hypotonic biliary dyskinesia (lazy gallbladder) and hypertonic biliary dyskinesia.
It helps if you suffer from lazy gallbladder (the bile isn't evacuated fast enough in the duodenum). With its sedative, calming, and antispasmodic action is also effective in hypertonic biliary dyskinesia (the gallbladder contracts too much and the bile is evacuated to fast)
As an added bonus, Lemon balm prevents gallstones formation and stimulates the secretion of bile in the liver cells.
Drink 1 cup of concentrated combined infusion per day.
2. Another herb you can use for hypertonic biliary dyskinesia is Peppermint (Mentha piperita).
It relieves the gallbladder muscle spasms and has a general muscle relaxation action. Its active ingredients stimulate the functioning of the gallbladder and have a decongestant and calming action.
To avoid biliary dyskinesia crisis try to eat at fixed hours, and lie down on the right side for half an hour after lunch for an effective bile drainage.
3. Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a good natural remedy for those who suffer from hypertonic biliary dyskinesia.
It has an antispasmodic and relaxation action on the gallbladder muscles. It also stimulates the good functioning of the liver and of the gallbladder and it relieves abdominal cramps.
Chicory contains chicoric acid (related to cinarina from Artichoke leaves), bitter substance and a sugar group, called inulin. It also contains minerals (iron, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, copper, magnesium) and vitamins (A, B1, B2, C, K and PP).
These components give chicory tea a choleretic action, helping the bile secretion and causing increased diuresis. A two week treatment with chicory tea is an amazing simple and natural way to increase bile secretion.
4. Black radish juice makes a very good drainage of the bile. It makes the bile more fluid and calms the gallbladder spasms.
Drink two cups of black radish juice a day for three weeks, two times a year.
You can supplement the black radish juice with honey for more beneficial effects like stimulating bile evacuation and preventing gallstones formation or dissolving the existing gall stones.
To avoid biliary dyskinesia crisis try to eat at fixed hours, and lie down on the right side for half an hour after lunch for an effective bile drainage.
Biliary dyskinesia diet isn't an exact science so, although some foods can be recommended, avoid them if they are not right for you.
