Bikers To Help Prevent Theft By Taking Precautions When Parking

By:

Thousand of bikers are expected to support the campaign 'No To Bike Parking Fees' by demonstrating in London on 16th August. The group are objecting to the Westminster's Council introduction of parking charges for the use of bike parking bays and are looking to gather as many bikers as possible to take part. The group intends to ride to SW1 and serve court papers on Westminster Council.

With the government's campaign for motorists to 'go green' and switch from four wheels to two has outraged bikers who are now having to pay for parking and see this as a direct insult to those who have always or opted to use this mode of transport to get around the city and help reduce both congestion and lower carbon emissions. Bikes are already exempt from the congestion fees, which has prompted many people to ride to work rather than pay, however this latest parking charge is seeing the savings made disappear fast in parking charges.

Insurers are also advising bikers to take every precaution when parking their bikes as the increased numbers of people swapping from cars to bikes continues to increase thieves are having an field day and find rich pickings from those who do not securely park their machines. It is all to easy for bikes which are not securely chained to be picked up and put into the back of a van.

Insurance companies are also advising bikers to have approved tracking devices fitted to the motorbikes as the chances of recovery are far greater than without. Theft of motorbikes is not merely joy riders out to have a good time at someone else's expense. Large bikes are often stolen to order as they are easy to strip down and sell on. Making thieves lives as hard as possible is also advised by insurers.

Identity marking each part of your machine is recommended along with fitting alarms and immobilisers. Using anti-theft chains and threading this through the front of the machine, not just the wheel, may deter thieves as they will have to fiddle around for longer in order to steal the bike which will hopefully draw attention of passers by.

Bikers are becoming savvy when it comes to protecting their beloved machines, however it is the increasing number of new riders which are currently being targeted by thieves as they are less likely to have any added protection.

Established and reputable insurance companies are able to give advice as to how to lower the cost of the insurance premiums by having these anti-theft devices fitted as they would much rather your bike wasn't stolen as this will reduce the number of claims being made.

The rising cost of both car and motorcycle insurance is said to be due to the increased number of claims for machines along with personal injury claims and rising legal fees. Therefore the more you can do to prevent theft and keep your bike on the road the more discounts you will be offered by insurers.
