Biggest Reorganisation In Nhs History

Health services all over the UK are getting ready for the biggest reorganisation that the NHS has ever seen. In light of the NHS shake up doctors will be in charge of almost 80% of the NHS budget, scrapping organisations such as the PCT and the strategic health authorities. GPs will have more choice of where to send their patients. Overall the changes are costing a huge 1.4bn, with 20,000 redundancies and 400m on setting up the new consortia which will oversee the entire change.
Of course a change like this doesnt come without oppositions. Many are arguing that the bill has been rushed through parliament, without proper testing or debate. It is believed that the scheme should be gradually introduced. This would allow GPs to become accustomed to the changes, which many believe they could struggle with.

The changes will also encourage greater competition from the private sector; some critics believe that these changes will lead to much greater involvement, which could undermine local NHS hospitals; this is already evident with come NHS local hospital being taken over by private companies. Many believe that private hospitals will cherry-pick the easiest patients that arent going to require a longer stay in hospital, as they are the most profitable patients.

In regards to the change, patients are likely to see no big changes in the way that GPs and the NHS are run. However, they will have more freedom to choose where and how they are treated. This will include their choice of GP as practice boundaries are to be eliminated giving more choice to patients.
These changes could easily lead to the closing of some UK hospitals. With GPs able to commission services form any willing provider; it is likely that NHS hospitals could be closed in order to make way for new private providers.

Adding to the worry of these changes, it has been reported that we are running out of anti-biotics. As our drug resistance increases, it is becoming increasing difficult to find new drugs to replace those that we are already accustomed to. In light of this, filling up our drug cabinets could become increasingly harder.

All these factors affecting the NHS could soon lead to people visiting their GPs less and less in favour of home remedies. We could soon see increased sales of home medical supplies such as otoscopes or ophthalmoscopes, as an alternative.
