Beware The Free E-mail Account

By:

I am a judgment referral expert (Judgment Broker) who writes a lot. This article is my opinion about potential headaches people may have if they continue to use Hotmail, or several other free e-mail services.

Hotmail is no longer supported by Microsoft. Even when it was supported, it was free, and free e-mail accounts offer only the most basic level of support.

Using an e-mail account is not as simple as it was before. Spammers, hackers, and malware attacks on(mostly) Windows PCs that collects your email address, and uses it to send spam that "comes from you". Of course it doesn't actually come from you. Anyone can set up an email program to send email from me@u.com, or your e-mail address.

As e-mail archival and access is so important now, free accounts usually do not have enough free or paid support available, for anything more than trivial problems. The free e-mail system one uses today might go away soon.

If you forgot your password after years of having it stored on a computer that died, that's too bad. If a hacker breaks into your account and changes the password, that's too bad. If a spammer uses your e-mail address to spam, that's too bad. If someone tries to log-in to your account with the wrong password too many times that it blocks your account, too bad. With huge problems like these, you need live, real support. For the case of Hotmail, Microsoft's solution is Windows Live. This does not work on the Macintosh, which doesn't make sense to me because Intel-based Macs have become very popular. For most Hotmail users, Microsoft has transitioned their existing Hotmail accounts to Window's Live. (You can usually retain the same email address and password, that was used before.)

However, the Windows Live Hotmail update is not always successful in preserving all of your old passwords, folders and contacts. If the upgrade does not work, one can e-mail Microsoft Windows Live support, and get an answer between 3 days and never, too often never. Maybe logging into: http://login.live.com/login.srf? will work, perhaps not.

There is no phone, or any type of support for Hotmail users that are locked out. If you have 200 contacts and 90 folders with 8 years of email, being suddenly locked out and permanently is not very easy to accept. Besides web sites that vaguely hint they will try to repair Hotmail problems for about $130, it seems no solution for Hotmail support. If you can't make Hotmail work, there are several choices of free accounts, for example Yahoo or Gmail. If you can access your Hotmail account, you can set it up to forward your e-mails to your Gmail account. Gmail is free, yet it has excellent support on the web.
